I am delighted and excited to have been sworn as the Minister of Statistics as well as Associate Minister of both Immigration and Environment. It was a thrill to get the phone call from Prime Minister Bill English inviting me to become a member of his executive team. I have inherited important and topical policy portfolio responsibilities and I’m very much looking forward to getting my teeth into these important roles.
It’s been a long time since we’ve had a Cabinet Minister from our electorate. I will work even harder to ensure our region is well represented in Wellington.
New Bus Service
Full marks to Coromandel Adventures for setting up the new daily return bus service from Coromandel Town to Rotorua via Thames, Paeroa, Te Aroha and Matamata. I enjoyed the chance to catch up with the bus on its first day as it passed through Thames.
Many of our visitors, especially from overseas, start their New Zealand adventures from Auckland. Obviously they don’t want to go back to Auckland to continue on after they’ve visited the Coromandel. This new service means people will be able to depart from here and make their way directly to the tourist meccas of Hobbiton and then on to Rotorua without the need to go back to Auckland. The afternoon return trip will bring people from those visitor hotspots up our way so they can spend time and money in our patch. Perfect arrangement.
New Tourist Infrastructure Funding
We know how much tourists love the Coromandel and we love having them.
But we want to make sure their experiences will leave them with the right memories of our beautiful Peninsula while leaving our landscape looking as pristine as when they arrived.
So the announcement of a $178 million tourism infrastructure package is a huge step towards that perfect balancing act. It’ll go a long way to meeting the need for more tourism facilities.
We’ve already had some funding for local projects from a previous Government initiative, but this new money will mean there are more to come in our patch.
Congratulations and thank you to all involved with the latest production from the Coromandel Players. Roger Hall’s ‘Spreading Out’ was absolutely first class. I thoroughly enjoyed the show. Great night out!
