“Decision Time for Old Kopu Bridge” says MP Scott Simpson

Monday, June 22, 2015

“The time for talking about the fate of the old Kopu bridge has passed” said Coromandel MP Scott Simpson.

“It’s now more than 3 and a half years   since the new bridge was opened and still no final decision   on the old bridge. The original plan was to demolish the old bridge and I am saying the “powers that be” should just get on with it.”

“The time for talking is over” said Mr Simpson.

“The group seeking to preserve the old bridge has had more than enough time to convince the NZ Transport Authority and as far as I can see there is no compelling case to keep it “  said Mr Simpson.

“In the meantime the old bridge has become a derelict eyesore. It does nothing to enhance our region. The old bridge did sterling service during its 83 years of operation but the time has come for it to go” said Scott Simpson.

“I worry about the safety of the old bridge as   it has visibly deteriorated over the last three years. It’s now just a blot on our landscape, hardly appropriate for the gateway to the Coromandel” said Mr Simpson.
