Camera monitoring of commercial trawlers is a big step forward says Coromandel MP, Scott Simpson.

“100% camera coverage of the commercial Snapper One trawl fleet is a smart use of technology to help protect the future of fishing for the Coromandel.

“Our fishery resource is one of our most precious assets on the Coromandel. Camera coverage means there is no dispute about what is being caught, where it’s being caught and who is doing the catching.

“Camera coverage is good for the fishery but it helps protect commercial operators from allegations of illegal or inappropriate fishing as well.

“Increased monitoring will provide greater transparency and scrutiny of the commercial fleet’s activities. I hope it will help improve public confidence that our fisheries are being properly managed.

Snapper 1 is the technical name given to describe New Zealand’s most valuable inshore fishery area, covering Bay of Plenty, the Hauraki Gulf and the eastern coast of Northland

“Our region is attracting more tourists and visitors. This new mandatory commercial camera coverage is ultimately for everyone’s good.
