As we get closer to Christmas our minds are rightly preoccupied with friends and family. I always get to this time of year wondering how it can be that Christmas has rolled around again as quickly as it does.

It’s been another busy year with lots happening here in the beautiful Coromandel electorate and for me in Wellington at Parliament. We finish the year as a region and as a nation in very good shape. Our local economy is booming, new people are moving here in record numbers, unemployment and interest rates are the lowest they’ve been in decades and our tourism, farming and small business sectors are all doing well. 2017 is looking like it will be a great year. I’m looking forward to the opportunities it will present for Mercury Bay and the Coromandel.

New Leadership Team

Bill English is a proven and experienced politician. I’m really pleased he is our new Prime Minister and I’m looking forward to working as closely with him as I did with John Key. Very few people have become Prime Minister with so much preparation and familiarity of the role and what it entails. Bill’s been a regular visitor to the electorate and he’ll be back again. He’s got a down to earth Southern style mixed with a fierce intellect and a terrific sense of humour.

As Deputy Prime Minister, Paula Bennett represents the broad church that is the modern National Party. She has handled the big positive changes to social welfare which have so successful in reducing the number of people dependent on social welfare treadmill and she’s has held big portfolios like Social Housing and Climate Change Issues.  Needless to say she’s got a wonderful bubbly personality combined with a determination to get things done. Those are the characteristics that have got her were she is today and that will ensure the new Bill and Paula leadership team is a terrific success for New Zealand.

Thank you John Key

It’s been an absolute privilege working with John Key and to have served in the National Party caucus he led. John Key has been a good friend and supporter of our region. History will record his term as our Prime Minister generously and favourably. In my view, John Key will be remembered as one of New Zealand’s greatest Prime Ministers.

Happy and safe holidays

For many in our region, summer is the busiest time of the year. My hope is that everyone can share the special joys this time of year brings for family and friends. Thank you to those who keep us safe over the summer and especially to emergency service volunteers.

Finally for 2016, I want to extend my very best wishes to you and yours for a safe, peaceful Christmas season.
